Born: May 27th, 1959
Andrew Gouché is a world-renowned bassist, musical director, producer and composer, known as “The Godfather of Gospel Bass.” His innovative bass lines, fills and groove combined with his unique bass sound, provided by his unique touch and MTD basses, have made him a player that is often imitated but never duplicated. The Gospel bass legend has been featured on magazine covers and interviews by publications around the world .
A native of Los Angeles, Gouché was born into a musical family. He started out singing in the church choir where his grandfather was the pastor and his mother the lead singer. At eight years old he picked up his first instrument, the trumpet, which he played until he discovered the bass guitar at age 15 after seeing Larry Graham of Graham Central Station on Soul Train.
After discovering the bass guitar, it was clear, Andrew had “truly found what he was meant to do in life.” He taught himself to play bass at Rev. James Cleveland’s church and in the late 70’s, he would begin to work with Gospel legends including Rev. James Cleveland, Andraé Crouch, The Winans and The Hawkins Family. His bass playing and creativity begin to set a new standard for Gospel bassists and pulled Gospel bass firmly away from the Organists foot pedals and onto the fretboard. Today, bass guitar is a must-have in churches across America. He has paved the way and inspired today’s generation of Gospel and R&B bassists.
His success in the Gospel industry didn’t go unnoticed by artists in the R&B industry and eventually opened the door for his first R&B gig with Cheryl Lynn. Before long he became a first call for recording sessions with top artists across many genres including, Prince, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Julio Iglesias, Madonna, Snoop Dogg, Warren G, Earth, Wind & Fire, Aretha Franklin and many more.
He’s also played on some of the largest world stages in television and film including, Good Morning America, The Today Show, MTV Awards, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Saturday Night Live,The Grammy Awards, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Morning Show and Jimmy Kimmel Show. He was the bassist on the legendary BET Awards Tribute to Chaka Khan which featured Prince, Stevie Wonder, India.Arie, Yolanda Adams and of course Chaka Khan herself.
Gouché began composing his own music in 1999 after 41 years of supporting other artists. His first album “We Don’t Need No Bass” (a nod to the time when gospel choirs would tell him that the organ player would play bass with their foot pedals) was released in 2015. Andrew continues to inspire bass players all around the world with his unique and creative playing and his never-ending pursuit of new ideas and sounds.
